The 2013 Souper Bowl is scheduled for Saturday, January 26th from 11 am to 2 pm at Roadrunner Food Bank. We anticipate more than 40 restaurants participating this year. Thanks to the generous support of participating restaurants, our sponsors and guests are able to enjoy delectable desserts and savory soups! For the past several years, more than 1,200 people come to enjoy the event.
This is a special year for Souper Bowl as it is the 20th Anniversary year and we expect it to be the best event yet. As you know, the event directly supports the mission of Roadrunner Food Bank in our work to fight hunger and feed hope for hungry New Mexicans. This is an event that started off with only a few hundred people attending along with only a few restaurants with samples of soup. Over the years The Souper Bowl has become a community favorite and in past was voted “Best Charity Event” by the Weekly Alibi in Albuquerque which is a title we want to win again! There will be live music by the Peacemakers, soup and desert samples from over 40+ restaurants and also a fantastic prize drawing.
Along with an excellent selection of soups, restaurants will also be trying to win attendee votes for the highly coveted Souper Bowl Awards. We have two categories of awards – Critics’ Choice and People’s Choice.
The Critics’ Choice judges are local food writers and TV and radio personalities. They conduct blind tastings of the soup. They use a scoring system that asks them to rate each soup on appearance, aroma, texture, flavor, etc. Restaurants will submit what they think is their best soup sample for judging.
For People’s Choice awards, each attendee is given a ballot with a list of restaurants serving soup, a list of restaurants serving soup, vegetarian soup, a list of restaurants serving dessert and a write-in line for Best Booth.
What probably is most exciting for this event is the fact that it is a competition! See which restaurants will be competing for the coveted Souper Bowl Champion Award. View our participating restaurants here!
Though we expect that this event will be a great deal of fun for community members and families, we do not want to forget the main reason for this fundraising effort. It continues to be a critical time as there are more hungry people than ever before in our state. A recent USDA study said that more than 22% of our neighbors are suffering from hunger. That is nearly 1 in every 4 people or one quarter of our entire state’s population. All proceeds that are raised will go directly to our mission in feeding hope, fighting hunger!
