Rotary Del Norte Foundation Makes 15,000 New Mexico Meals Possible!

In our ongoing appeal to solve hunger across New Mexico, we cannot thank enough the Rotary Del Norte Foundation for their $3,000 contribution to our work!

Why Solving Summer Hunger Matters

“Fewer than 4 million kids — or just 18% of those in the school lunch program — are fed through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s summer food program. While that’s a record number for the 40-year-old initiative, many advocates and government officials say more needs to be done. ‘In the summer, when those school meals disappear, children find themselves hungry and with few options,’ said Duke Storen, a senior director at Share Our Strength, which aims to end child hunger. ‘It impacts their health and well-being and contributes to learning loss.’ ”    Tami Luby, “When School’s Out, Millions of Kids Go Hungry” It’s a curious thing when you think about it, “summer vacation.” How can a time of enjoyment, of fun for so many American kids and families, also mark a time of anxiety, insecurity, even malnutrition for millions more American kids and families?

Help Us & American Home Feed Hungry Families Across New Mexico This Summer!

Thanks to American Home for donating 5 percent of their sales to hunger relief from June 10-19! Their efforts help us at Roadrunner Food Bank to solve hunger across New Mexico this summer! During 2015 alone, American Home’s sales campaigns in partnership with us allowed them to give our work more than $23,000 and made 115,000 more meals possible for our clients statewide!

Solving Senior Hunger: Meet Mary Martinez

In many ways, Mary Martinez could very well be your next door neighbor. She’s not afraid to share that she’s 63 years old. She loves cooking and gardening at her and her husband’s home in the North Valley of Albuquerque. She has five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also, like many of our neighbors in New Mexico, Mary and her husband until recently faced daily food insecurity. They didn’t know where their next meal would come from.
