It’s Hunger Action Month, and We’re All About Orange!

Carrots, oranges, cantaloupe and habanero peppers– while there aren’t a lot of orange foods, the color orange can help us ensure that hungry people in New Mexico have enough to eat this September.  That’s because September is Hunger Action Month, and the color orange raises awareness about hunger.

(In partnership with our national organization, Feeding America, we’re participating in Hunger Action Month all September long.)

Hunger is a problem experienced by many, but it lives in the shadows.  Many of our friends, colleagues and neighbors are suffering in silence, not knowing where they’ll get their next meal.  They may feel shame or embarrassment about not having enough to eat, but the reality is that many families are not able to make ends meet, and food is often the first thing to be cut from the household budget.

You can get involved and take daily actions to help:

  • Download the 30 Ways in 30 Days Calendar and post it up at your office, home and favorite coffee shop.
  • Follow the Food Bank on Facebook, Instagram and twitter!
  • GO ORANGE! Hunger Action Day is Thursday, September 4.  Take a selfie in your best orange outfit and post it with hashtags #HungerAction and #OrangeCarpetCrew
  • Stop by the Food Bank and bring a non-perishable or fresh food donation to our warehouse and pose for a photo on our ORANGE CARPET – you can even get dolled up with our orange accessories!

  • Use Feeding America’s Social Media App to turn your social media sites orange and donate a tweet or status to hunger relief.
  • Text RRFB to 20222 to make a one-time $10 donation.
  • Meet Hungry Kate and share her two-minute video.
  • Volunteer!  We have volunteer shifts at the Food Bank Monday through Saturday and welcome children as young as six to participate with supervision.  We can also accommodate groups of up to 100 people, perfect for company team-builder days or scouting activities!
  • Give! Become a donor and provide food to hungry people throughout the state.  For every $1 you give, we can distribute FIVE wholesome meals!

Hunger Action Month is all about shedding light on hunger and helping those in need.  I am encouraging you to use your voice, your social media accounts, your wardrobe, your time and your bank account to help us solve hunger in New Mexico permanently.  No child, senior, mother or veteran should feel the fear, pain and helplessness associated with going hungry.
