Food Boxing Olympics 2006!

Quick Links

They came in dress shirts and loafers, shorts and sneakers, dresses and sandals—all to help feed Seniors.  Thanks to all of our participants in the Food Boxing Olympics 2006.  This year’s event, our second, grew from 10 to 25 teams  Each team paid an entry fee of $72.00 as a Senior Helping Box for a year costs $144.00.  A great time was had by all.

Congratulations to all of the participants!:

Each team hustled for 10 minutes to create the most Senior Helpings boxes! It was close with many teams creating over 40 boxes.  1049 Boxes were filled during the 2 hour competition.  Every team had a different strategy.

Albertsons took home the gold and silver with 51 and 49 boxes created respectively. Whole Foods Market won the bronze with 48 boxes.

A special thanks to Ann Perkins of KRST-FM/92.3, our mistress of ceremonies.

National Hunger Awareness Day

Our Food Boxing Olympics was held on Tuesday, June 6, in commemoration of National Hunger Awareness day.  Created to bring focus to the issue when it most affects people, this year’s National Hunger Awareness day featured seniors, one of our most vulnerable populations.

Here in New Mexico, an estimated 21,000 seniors needed emergency food in 2005 -- almost double the number in 2001. Our Senior Helpings program is a supplemental program with 1200 boxes distributed each month. Three menus of boxes were created with the help of a nutritionist for our Seniors’ special needs: basics, high protein and diabetic. If you would like more information about our Senior Helpings program, contact Jasmin Holmstrup, our Director of Marketing at 247-2052 ext 129.
