Volunteer News

Thanks for Helping Out!

Thank you to all of our 4,200+ volunteers who worked with Roadrunner Food Bank throughout 2006.  Our wonderful volunteers contributed over 25,000 hours, or the equivalent of 12 full-time employees.

27% of our volunteers are youth and schools, 11% come with their church or faith community, and 18% come with their business or employer. The most common types of volunteers (32%) are individuals who come on their own, with friends or with family.

Without the year-round help of volunteers, it would not be possible for Roadrunner Food Bank to process and distribute nearly 14 million pounds of food per year.  We sincerely thank you and look forward to working with you in 2007.

If you have any questions about volunteering with Roadrunner Food Bank, please contact Stephanie Silver at 247-2052 ext 101 or send her an EMAIL.

FOOD FOR KIDS Update

Our Christmas partnerships with Wal-Mart, DW Turner, the Rotary Club of Albuquerque and Tiffany Homes were a smashing success. Thanks to generous sponsorships and support from these groups, we were able to deliver presents to over 350 Food for Kids children. The gifts were delivered to the schools along with a supply of family food backpacks, making it easier for families in need to get through the Christmas season.

With Wal-Mart's Santa Kids program, six students who won an essay contest on why they wanted to help other children for Christmas won the opportunity to shop for 300 Food for Kids students.  DW Turner then handled all the logistics of preparing and delivering the presents to the schools.  The feedback from the schools was terrific and they and the families were very thankful for the gifts and food.

The Rotary Club of Albuquerque adopted a number of children, some from local homeless shelters.   The Rotary Club of Albuquerque did a fantastic job of showering these kids with beautifully wrapped presents.  There were lots of smiles and tears of joy and thanks for what they had received.

Last, Tiffany Homes adopted three families who had not made it into the other programs. They were very generous with their support and the receiving families were extremely thankful.

Making all of this happen was very hectic but very worthwhile and our thanks go out to the organizations for their generosity and support.

SENIOR HELPINGS Update

While the program is humming along nicely, the agencies that distribute the Senior Helpings boxes need volunteers to help with the deliveries.  The work isn't difficult - it just requires a consistent commitment of a couple of hours each month and the ability to lift a box that is approximately 30 pounds.  If you are interested, please contact Teresa Johansen at 247-2052 ext 124 or send her an EMAIL.  We'll work with you to find an agency with delivery hours that fit your schedule.

EMERGENCY FOOD FOR FAMILIES Program

We had quite a month in December with several great successes to share with you. Last time we told you about our goal to run two trial programs to help in our distribution of Emergency Food for Families boxes.  The first test with UNM Hospitals is now off the ground and working.  Before Christmas, they received their first, formal set of boxes and are now actively identifying and distributing the boxes to needy individuals and families.

Roadrunner Food Bank initiated this test program because we had received several calls from individuals who had just been released from the hospital and had no food when they went home.  Because of issues with finding volunteers to make deliveries and the time that it takes to get in touch with an agency, these vulnerable individuals could go for several days without support.  The partnership with UNM Hospital eliminates the entire issue because needy individuals are assigned a social worker by the hospital who gets to know the family situation and can best assess whether a food box is necessary.  Roadrunner Food Bank has also given the hospital social workers referral guides with information on different community organizations that they or the family can look to for further and more continuous support.  We are very excited about this test.
