NATIONAL HUNGER AWARENESS DAY

Hunger is a significant problem for our state with 1 out of 6 New Mexicans, or an estimated 16.8 percent of the state’s population, at risk for hunger.  Another 110,000 New Mexicans, more than the combined populations of Rio Rancho and Farmington, go hungry for several days for several consecutive months.  These statistics come from the USDA Report Household Food Insecurity in the United States 2006 released last November.

Each year Roadrunner Food Bank and its statewide network of 700 agencies feed more than 238,000 New Mexicans. Yet there are approximately 120,000 who still need our help.

And Summer is no picnic for the hungry.  Hunger increases during the summer as children and families struggle to eat three meals a day and pay for childcare. In addition, this summer there is the increased cost of transportation with gasoline now over $3.00 per gallon.

National Hunger Awareness Day was established six years ago to bring focus to hunger, which increases during the summer. Throughout the nation, Food Banks are hosting events to commemorate the day.  Roadrunner Food Bank is honoring the day with two special events: Dine Out Help Out to End Hunger and our signature Food Boxing Olympics 2007
