March 2008

Message from Food Bank Board Chair Lydia T. Ashanin

As an organization, Roadrunner Food Bank had a tremendous year in 2007, with a number of significant achievements and opportunities.  We obtained funding to purchase trucks for our Mobile Pantry program which will serve hungry people in currently underserved areas of the state, we welcomed new members to our Full Plate Society, and we made significant strides toward our goal of expanding our services through greater distribution efficiency, to name a few of our many accomplishments.

It is particularly exciting to let you know that 2008 already promises to be even more phenomenal.  We have a new public awareness campaign - Stick a Fork in Hunger - created with help from DW Turner, Comcast, ClearChannel Outdoor Advertising and Halflife Digital.  The campaign launch is scheduled for April 2, 2008.  Our first Mobile Pantry deliveries will begin April, 2008 as well.  In addition, we are exploring some remarkable opportunities to collaborate with the State of New Mexico more closely.

From my perspective, what makes these achievements so profound and worth celebrating is that with each of these programs and efforts, we get closer and closer to the day when we end hunger in New Mexico.  That day is coming because we have an extraordinary staff, from our Executive Director to the newest warehouse employee, whose integrity and dedication are the foundation of our organizational strength.  We have a deeply committed core of donors, volunteers, and community partners who are instrumental in our efforts. Most importantly, we have a clear vision, an achievable vision, to improve the lives of vulnerable New Mexicans by ending the experience of hunger in our state.

We celebrate every milestone achievement on the way because each one is a testament to the power of our dream and the power of our partnership with each one of you.  Thank you for your belief in our mission and for your support.  Let's celebrate our accomplishments together as we keep working toward our goal.

Sincerely yours,

Lydia T. Ashanin

Scouting For Food

Living up to their slogan - Do a Good Turn Daily -  the Boy Scouts of America Great Southwest Council certainly accomplished a very good turn for those in need by collecting the equivalent of approximately 24,000 pounds of food in cash and food donations across New Mexico and Southern Colorado during the 2008 Scouting for Food drive, held Feb. 2 – Feb. 9.

“It’s a great partnership between Roadrunner and the Boy Scouts because the Scout slogan is to Do a Good Turn Daily,” said Col. Robert Suminsby, Jr., Chair of the 2008 Scouting for Food drive and Kirtland Air Force Base Commander.  “By partnering with Roadrunner, the Boy Scouts do a good turn for thousands across the state.”

On Feb. 2, area Cub, Boy and Eagle Scouts delivered empty Smith’s Food & Drug Stores plastic grocery bags (generously donated by Smith’s) to homes, requesting the bags be left at the resident’s door filled with canned goods and non-perishable food items on Feb. 9 – when the Scouts returned to pick them up.

U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman and Comcast also stepped in to promote Scouting for Food by airing a series of public service announcements encouraging New Mexicans to donate food.

“New Mexicans are feeling the pinch of tight family budgets,” said Sen. Bingaman. “Roadrunner and food banks like it are filling a very important role in these difficult economic times.  I applaud the Boy Scouts and everyone involved who donated for making 'Scouting for Food' such a success.”

Roadrunner Food Bank thanks the Scouts for conducting such a successful Scouting for Food drive to help feed hungry New Mexicans.

Volunteer News

Volunteers Needed For Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

Summer is not a happy time for many children and families in our state.  Hunger actually increases during the summer months when children are out of school.  Many families, already struggling financially, are faced with day care expenses and increased food costs.   Traditionally, summer is a time that food banks see financial contributions and food donations drop off.

You can help Stamp out Hunger on Saturday, May 10th.  Postal Carriers across Albuquerque will pick up food that has been left at mailboxes.

Volunteers are needed at 11 area post offices to unload and sort food collected by the Letter Carriers.  Volunteers are needed for two shifts - 2:00pm until 4:00pm and 4:00pm until 6:30pm. You’re welcome to sign up for both shifts.

To volunteer for the food drive, please contact Patty Gillis, Volunteer Coordinator, at 505-349-8825 or send her an EMAIL.

Advocacy

Food Bank Urges Swift Passage Of Farm Bill

Food insecurity has increased from 35.1 million people a year ago to more than 35.5 million, including 12.6 million children.  Alarmingly, New Mexico has the second highest percentage of people who are forced to wonder where their next meal is coming from.

That’s why Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico is calling on legislators to swiftly pass the Farm Bill, a safety net that provides food assistance.  Competing versions of the Farm Bill have already passed both chambers of Congress.  When Congress reconvenes on April 1, 2008, a House-Senate conference committee will draft, and hopefully approve, a final Farm Bill to send to President Bush for his signature.  It is imperative that Congress and the President pass the Farm Bill quickly so vulnerable families, seniors and children can count on putting food on the table.

To learn how you can help, visit the Hunger Action Center at www.hungeractioncenter.org, where you can send a letter to Members of Congress.
