Farmer Food Rescue in New Mexico
According to FoodRescue.net, more than 40% of the food in the United States is wasted. In an effort to keep so much food from going to waste and help hunger relief efforts here in New Mexico, we have implemented a Food Rescue Program. Our New Mexico Food Bank is trying to keep good food out of landfills and put it in the hands of people who are in need of food assistance.
What Food We Rescue from Farmers
Nutritious food is grown all over New Mexico on farms of all sizes. Sometimes, the food doesn’t always make it from the farm to the store in time to be sold. That’s where our Food Bank steps in and rescues the food from being plowed under. Roadrunner Food Bank is happy to accept various types of farm-grown food, including:
- Any fresh fruits and vegetables (including chile, potatoes, onions, melons, squash, beans, carrots, corn, cabbage, etc.)
- Walnuts, pistachios, peanuts and pecans
- Excess food product or product left in the field
- Rejected orders
- Mis-sized product (too big, too small)
- Off-spec items
- Edible culls
We are happy to coordinate possible pickups by the Food Bank or one of our affiliated Food Rescue Certified agencies. The food you donate makes a huge difference in our hunger relief efforts. Last year, more than 9 million pounds of produce was distributed to our network of partner agencies.
Help our Food Bank Feed Hungry People
Every week in New Mexico, Roadrunner Food Bank feeds nearly 40,000 hungry adults, children and seniors all over the state. Being able to distribute nutritious foods such as produce is important in the diets of hungry people. Many hungry people have told us they cannot afford to buy fruits and vegetables and the only produce they receive is through one of the Food Bank’s distribution partners or sites.
We would not be able to continue to provide nutritious food and food assistance without the support of our farm community. If you are a farmer or rancher interested in giving back to your community, please contact our New Mexico Food Bank for more information! Together we can solve hunger!
