OUR ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY

The leading hunger relief organization in New Mexico

As the largest food bank in the state, we play a major role in distributing a variety of donated and purchased food items to people struggling to cover all their nutritional needs. This commitment to hunger relief has been at the core of our work since our founding in 1979. Our food industry partners have helped make our work a reality by donating millions of pounds of food from across the country and right here in New Mexico year after year. In the last 10 years alone, rescued food products brought to our warehouse account for 170 million pounds of food – all for the benefit of our hungry neighbors. This amazing resource has made 141 million meals possible for low-income members of our community.

While we know that getting food out through our statewide distribution network is vital, we need to do more and in a slightly different way. It has become a secondary part of our mission to “SEED partnerships that build self-sufficiency for tomorrow and LEAD to achieve our vision of permanently ending hunger in our state.”

So what does that mean?

  • Advocating for the people we serve with our elected officials on policies which impact their daily lives.
  • Bringing and encouraging our member partners to provide additional services at distribution points, including health care screenings, nutrition education, clothing assistance, food stamp application help and more.
  • Creating innovative hunger programs through our Childhood and Senior Hunger Initiatives.
  • Connecting the dots between health and hunger and serving as a public health resource to reduce chronic health issues our low-income neighbors face. We provide access to the most nutritious food we can and bring it to distribution partners at health care sites, through member partners, and through an on-site medical referral food pantry.
