What is SNAP?

SNAP is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as “food stamps.” It helps families facing hunger with access to healthy and nutritious food such as fruits and vegetables available to purchase with the benefit at grocery stores and farmers’ markets. These supplemental funds help ease the financial burden families face, allowing them to preserve their small incomes for rent, prescriptions, and necessary living expenses.

The monthly benefit is application-based and helps anyone who is income-eligible including working families, single individuals, seniors, people with disabilities, and people who are unemployed. SNAP benefits are typically issued once a month through a debit/EBT card that can be used at participating authorized retailers and farmers’ markets.

As one of the most food insecure states in the country, this program is important to the people of New Mexico. SNAP benefits can be used right in the local community and have a local impact, too: SNAP contributes $1.54 in local economic activity for every $1 in SNAP that is used.

Am I Eligible for SNAP Benefits?

• SNAP is for anyone who meets the eligibility requirements including single individuals, families, seniors, the disabled, and people experiencing homelessness.
• A SNAP household includes people who buy and prepare meals together. There can be more than one “household” under one roof.
• Owning a home or a car or having savings in the bank does not necessarily disqualify you from eligibility.
• Immigrants of qualified status (legal permanent residents for 5 years) and children of undocumented immigrants can still apply.
• Many working households need help with food. You can be employed, unemployed, or receiving unemployment benefits and you may still qualify.
• SNAP is designed to provide benefits for everyone who qualifies. Often eligible SNAP households are not informed about the program and have not yet applied to receive the benefits.
