HISTORY

Our founder Reverend Titus Scholl established Roadrunner Food Bank as a non-profit in 1979. As a pastor, he witnessed first-hand the tremendous poverty and hunger in New Mexico and knew he wanted to do something about it. Reverend Scholl was among a group of pioneers in the U.S. who began rescuing discarded food from grocers and storing it in a warehouse facility in order to supply it to member partners for the benefit of the hungry in his community. His vision lives on through our work today as we gather more food and work to feed more hungry individuals each year.

HOW FOOD BANKS WORK

Food banks are nonprofit organizations that source, acquire and distribute food to the hungry. As the name implies, we “bank” food and store it in a distribution center or warehouse. Smaller charitable organizations receive food from us through our fleet of semi-trucks. These smaller hunger relief partners have a variety of distribution dates and times when hungry community members visit. This statewide hunger relief network brings important sources of healthy and nutritious food to tens of thousands of people in both rural and urban communities every week of the year.
