The food bank trains community members interested in volunteering in our HELP Center twice a year – in April and August. Please understand that if you complete the volunteer interest form below, the food bank team will get in touch with you a few weeks before the next training opportunity.

Volunteer with our HELP Center

With your gift of volunteer time, together we can provide critical services that make a difference in the lives of people facing poverty and hunger. As a volunteer with our HELP Center you’ll connect people we serve to food assistance. This volunteer opportunity is ideal for individuals or as part of a service-learning opportunity tied to a student’s education. Please note that trainings for this opportunity are only offered twice a year and volunteers start their experience in one of two cohorts based on the training dates offered.

Volunteer: Food Assistance Hotline

Food Assistance Hotline volunteers help connect New Mexicans facing hunger with a hunger-relief location nearest their home.  Volunteers are trained to utilize our online food finder tool to access information based on zip code. The locations listed on the food finder tool are distribution sites we partner with all over the state and include food pantries, mobile distributions, soup kitchens, shelters, senior sites, etc. Volunteer wishing to help:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must commit to a one-hour virtual training to learn how to effectively handle food assistance calls. Note: trainings only occur twice a year as volunteers for this opportunity start in two group cohorts annually.
  • Must commit to volunteer consistently for at least six months
  • Must pass criminal background check
  • Should have moderate to advanced computer skills
  • Should have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Our food bank team always seeks volunteers fluent in multiple languages
  • Roadrunner Food Bank will provide you access to a mobile-friendly portal to sign in and out of your volunteer time with us.

Our food assistance volunteer opportunities are available as a virtual opportunity as well as in person at the food bank.

  • In person at food bank: Volunteers may take calls from a call center like room inside the food bank. Opportunities at the food bank are only available during business hours or in special circumstances.
  • Virtual volunteers: Community members interested in a virtual volunteer experience at home should have a reliable internet connection, a computer or laptop, and headset and/or cell phone to answer calls at home.  It is also preferred to have a quiet workspace free of background noise (ie: television, music, pets, etc.) to best assist people seeking hunger relief services. Roadrunner Food Bank will provide the software access each volunteer needs to connect incoming callers to you in your home.
