Disaster Relief in New Mexico and Across the United States
Flash floods. Devastating tornados. Destructive fires. In New Mexico and across the US, there is always the threat of natural or man-made disasters striking. We rarely, if ever, get proper warning for impending disaster. Even when we do, and even though we have prepared, it isn’t enough. Our New Mexico Food Bank helps communities across the state or across the nation by providing food and water after the damage has been done.
How We Help
Roadrunner Food Bank provides primarily food and clean water to people in need during and following disasters. In New Mexico, we provided food to more than 450 families affected by flooding in Hatch, Alamogordo, Socorro and Laguna in 2006. In 2007, we were called upon to send food to Clovis after a tornado blew through the community.
Roadrunner Food Bank has also been called upon by our sister Feeding America affiliated food banks around the country to participate in national disaster relief efforts such as Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita in 2005 and the devastating tornados that hit Oklahoma in May 2013. And with our own state’s severe fires we continue to be ready to provide food and clean water. In the summer of 2011, the Santa Fe Food Depot called upon us to send food donations and water up to Los Alamos during the Las Conchas fire which was the largest fire in the state at the time.
During a disaster or emergency of any kind, we can haul tractor trailer loads of food and clean water at the request of our partners. In order to continue delivering to disaster areas, we need the constant support of our community especially in times of crisis when we often have to use existing inventory of food and water or unplanned expenditures of fuel or staff resources.
